The idea of the metaverse, inspired by science fiction novels, has been scientifically pursued over the past two decades. In 2003, the Second Life platform allowed users to have a virtual life, but it did not gain much traction. With advancements in virtual reality in the 2010s, the concept resurfaced. In 2014, Facebook entered this space by acquiring Oculus, and the success of Pokemon Go in 2016 further increased user interest in related technologies. The turning point for the metaverse came in 2021 when Mark Zuckerberg rebranded Facebook as Meta, emphasizing his commitment to this virtual world. Companies like Microsoft and Google also invested in this field. In early 2020, the metaverse hype surged, and virtual assets were traded for exorbitant prices. However, this enthusiasm soon faded. By 2023, the value of digital land plummeted, and companies like Meta and Microsoft retreated from their metaverse projects, highlighting the unrealistic expectations surrounding this technology.
